Yard guides / Mowing and watering
Leave the clippings (grasscycling)
Free fertilizer, less work and no thatch problem.
Short grass clippings break down quickly and return nutrients to the soil. Leaving them saves time and bags, and many extension services say it can supply a meaningful share of a lawn's yearly nitrogen.
Myths
- Clippings don't cause thatch; thatch is mostly roots and stems
- They don't look messy if you follow the one-third rule and mow when dry
How to do it well
- Use a mulching blade or mulching setting if you have one
- Mow often enough that clippings are short
- If clumps form after a long gap, spread them with a rake or mow again
- Bag clippings when the lawn has a fungal disease or has gone to seed with weeds
