Hi there,
The job that matters now
Cool-season lawns (bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass): this is the best window of the year to fix thin spots. The soil is still warm and the air is cooling, which is exactly what new grass seed likes.
- Rake out dead grass in thin areas and loosen the top inch of soil.
- Spread seed that matches your lawn, then rake lightly and press it down.
- Keep the surface moist with light watering until it sprouts, then water less often and deeper.
Full guide: Fix bare and thin spots.
Warm-season lawns (Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine): ease off. Make your last feeding by early fall so the grass can slow down before dormancy.
Mowing tip
Look at the tips of your grass a day after mowing. White, shredded tips mean a dull blade. A quick sharpening now means a cleaner cut for the rest of the season.
Reader question
"Should I bag my clippings?" Usually not. Short clippings break down fast and feed the lawn. Bag them only if they clump or the lawn has a disease. More in Leave the clippings.
