Spring yard startup

The first jobs of the year, in the right order.

Best time: Early to late spring 5 min read

Spring is busy, and it's easy to do things too early. Wait until the soil is no longer soggy and the grass is starting to grow before most lawn work.

Early spring

  • Rake gently to lift matted grass and remove debris once the lawn has dried
  • Service the mower: blade, oil, air filter, spark plug
  • Apply crabgrass pre-emergent before soil reaches about 55°F, if you use one
  • Take a soil test if it's been a few years

Mid to late spring

  • Start mowing when grass reaches one-third above your target height
  • Cool-season: light feeding only if needed; save heavy feeding for fall
  • Warm-season: feed once the lawn has fully greened up
  • Check sprinklers for leaks and coverage
