Winter prep for the yard and mower

Put the yard and your equipment to bed properly.

Best time: Late fall to winter 4 min read

A little care before winter makes spring easier and protects your equipment.

Yard

  • Clear the last leaves
  • Drain and store hoses; shut off and drain outdoor faucets if they aren't frost-free
  • Have the irrigation system winterized where the ground freezes
  • Mark the edges of beds and driveways for snow removal
  • Use plant-safe de-icers near lawns and beds and shovel before salting

Mower and tools

  • Gas mower: add fuel stabilizer and run it, or run the tank empty, following your manual
  • Clean grass off the deck
  • Remove and sharpen the blade so it's ready for spring
  • Store batteries indoors, partly charged
  • Clean and oil hand tools
